Piece Spotlight: Midnight Whisperer

The doll is not the child in this story. She is the witness.

The Nanofiction:

A doll with eyes of bright blue,
Whispered tales that were eerily true.
With a giggle and sigh,
Under the night sky,
She'll weave her dark magic on you.

Midnight Whisperer starts with a familiar image. A pale figure holds a doll beneath a moon. The blue eyes make both faces feel linked, but the image refuses to say how. Is the woman protecting the doll? Is the doll using her? The answer stays just beyond reach.

That restraint is where the limerick does its work. Limericks usually arrive with mischief and a clean snap at the end. This one keeps the bounce but trades comedy for a nursery-rhyme threat. “With a giggle and sigh” is almost gentle. Then the last line closes around it. The magic is not somewhere in the woods. It is headed directly toward the reader.

The artwork sharpens that movement. The moonlit forest gives the scene the shape of a folktale, while the dark veil and fixed blue stares make it feel intimate instead of distant. Nothing lunges from the frame. Nothing needs to. The danger is already being held.

Midnight Whisperer is built around a small, unnerving reversal. In this forest, the most dangerous thing may be the thing already in someone’s arms.
